Professionals enthuse over MMJ Awards

J.Lkhamsuren, Ph.D., Professor at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology and Director of the Geology and Mineral Museum, answers some questions.

The Mongolian Mining Journal has instituted annual awards for the best mining companies. How does this benefit the mining sector?

The event gains in importance as the number of local and foreign companies in the mineral sector increases. Its main benefit is that it gives the companies a platform to present to the public their objectives, operational methods and achievements. We have many arts and cultural awards and credit goes to the MMJ for raising awareness among the public on how the mining industry beneficially affects society. I wish more and more mining companies will actively participate in the event and vie for the awards. A singer presents his talents to the public by singing on the stage. It is the same with companies. They must publicise their work and how well they do it. The ceremony also offers networking opportunities to companies.

So you think the awards have a positive effect on developing the mineral sector…
I am certain of it. It is crucial for companies to present their activities and our people are also eager to know more about how mining companies work. Social commitment is not just about philanthropy. There is benefit to society if companies, starting from the director to every employee, work honestly and responsibly, displaying concern for environmental protection. The awards offer a chance to showcase successful instances.

How would you compare the MMJ Awards with those given by The Mineral Authority of Mongolia?
Neither is better or worse than the other. Both serve a good purpose and are of use. The MMJ awards cover a wider scope and stress the social component of mining operations, while the Ministry limits its criteria to the tax collected from them. That way, the MMJ awards are more significant.

How can things be made better?
Companies should be encouraged well in advance to prepare for the contest, and not just before the event. Also, there should be more publicity among people.

N.Batbayar, Chairman of the Environment, Tourism, Geology and Mining Department, SSIA: I see the MMJ awards as very important. The selection is made with professional fairness. It is good for development of the mineral sector if companies’ performance is publicly recognised by an independent organization, which evaluates them after a thorough study of their work during the whole year. It is also good that public opinion is considered when making the selection. Awards are there in the mineral and several other sectors, but the MMJ ones are special and different because no participating company is asked for a donation.

Ts.Bayaraa, Media and Public Relations Director at the MCS Group: It is a responsibility to evaluate fairly a year’s activities, whether of individuals or companies. A worthy choice raises the value of any award in the eyes of the people, but neither receiver nor giver is taken seriously if the selection is perceived to be biased. I personally find it significant that mineral companies look forward to the MMJ Awards. They have faith that there is no hanky-panky in the choice of awardees. The judges are all well respected professionals and the MMJ does not receive any donation from contestants. I have also been struck by the prevalent mood at the awards ceremony, where all appreciate how work and intention are recognized in a knowledgeable manner. n
