CANADIAN AMBASSADOR VISITS 'BAYAN KHUNDII' GOLD PROJECT SITE

On June 9, 2025, Ambassador Choufani visited the Bayankhundii Gold Mine in Bayankhongor province, operated by Erdene Mongol LLC — a joint venture between Canada’s Erdene Resource Development Corporation and Mongol Mining Corporation (MMC).  This Canadian-led investment exemplifies the growing economic partnership between Canada and Mongolia, supported by the 2016 Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement.

Discovered 20 years ago, the Bayankhundii deposit is now nearing production, with operations expected to begin later this year. The mine’s processing plant has a capacity of 650,000 tonnes of ore per year. The project is poised to become a major contributor to Mongolia’s mining sector.

The facility is designed with sustainability at its core: 93.9% of process water is recycled, and a modern tailings facility ensures environmental safety and compliance with global best practices.

Under its Local Cooperation Agreement, the project invested 1.1 billion MNT in Bayankhongor province in 2024, with targeted support for education, healthcare, environmental protection, and infrastructure in Shinejinst and Bayan-Undur soums.
