Ulaanbaatar, June 15, 2025 –The construction of the Gashuunsukhait–Gantsmod cross-border railway officially commenced on June 15, 2025, with the drilling of the first foundation piles for a column bridge on both sides of the Mongolia–China border.
Ranked as the top priority among the 14 mega projects in the Mongolian Government’s 2024–2028 Action Program, the railway is a key component of national infrastructure development. The intergovernmental agreement for its construction was signed on February 14, 2025, in Harbin, China, and was later ratified by the State Great Khural (Parliament) of Mongolia.
Under the agreement, the two sides committed to implementing three key initiatives under the “three-in-one” comprehensive cooperation framework: the joint construction of the cross-border railway agreement, a long-term coal sale and purchase agreement, and the expansion of coal mine capacity.
Of these, the Agreement on the Joint Construction of the Cross-Border Railway was finalized by Mongolia’s Ministry of Road and Transport in coordination with the Chinese side and was officially signed on May 14, 2025. A groundbreaking ceremony for the project was subsequently held in collaboration with Chinese counterparts.
Although the cross-border railway presents significant engineering challenges and is being constructed within a sensitive border zone, the project is scheduled for completion within 22 months, with operations expected to begin shortly thereafter.
