B.Enebish, former CEO of Erdenes MGL and Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi: Happy 5th anniversary to the staff of the Mongolian Mining Journal!Looking back, 2008 was a landmark year for the mining industry of Mongolia. Mining began in many deposits, reserve estimates in several already discovered deposits were re-estimated, and talks began on operating Oyu Tolgoi and Tavan Tolgoi. Mind you, the basis for all this was laid in 2002 and 2003 when studies and large-scale prospection work had started. Also, it was during this time that international investors’ attention was drawn to the Mongolian mining sector and Mongolians started realising how the sector could be the key factor in the country’s future development.
It was not fortuitous that the Mongolian Mining Journal also saw the light of day at this time. In keeping with the new expectations in the air, this was a magazine that was new in many senses. It broke away from the stereotypes of the old professional magazines, and began offering information on and analysis of issues regarding investment and mine development. It was truly a product of the times and became compulsory reading for mining insiders as well as for those outside who wanted to follow the progress of mining projects, and to understand the reality and problems of infrastructure, production, marketing and investment.
I have admired how MMJ has always been on time with hard news, backing this up with candid interviews, the two together keeping the reader updated on the status of deposits, their operational and developmental issues, and providing understanding of the needs and problems of foreign investment. It has followed new trends in geology and mining, and reported on international mining projects. The most important thing about MMJ is that it does not take sides when reporting on controversial issues. It offers the arguments on both sides. Its only bias is for economic efficiency and professionalism. I hope MMJ never loses this perspective.
I worked as Executive officer of Erdenes MGL and Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi from 2008 to 2012, a period of working towards starting the operation of the Tavan Tolgoi and Oyu Tolgoi deposits. I would like to thank your magazine for publishing wide-ranging and fair information about these and other major mining projects, and for cooperating with us and supporting our work.
As Mongolia becomes one of the major mining countries of the world, I am sure the Mongolian Mining Journal would also become internationally well-known. I wish it all success in that quest!

I would like to take this opportunity to salute the management and staff of The Mining Journal on the fifth anniversary of publication. In those five years, the Journal has become, for me and many others I am sure, the indispensible voice of the mining industry in Mongolia. Let me be the first to express the hope that this 5th anniversary is only the first milestone on a future of great promise for the Journal, and for Mongolia.
