Sandvik Mongolia LLC: Long term partner in Mongolia for Equipment, Tools and Service Solutions

Jamie Ruddy, Managing Director of Sandvik Mongolia LLC, speaking on the company’s current and future commitment in the Mongolian mining industry.

How many years of history does Sandvik have?

Sandvik was founded in 1862 in Sandviken, Sweden. Sandvik has come a long way in 150 years, developing from a small Swedish company into an international, high-technology engineering group leader.  The Sandvik Group conducts operations in 5 Business Areas; Sandvik Mining, Sandvik Machining Solutions, Sandvik Materials Technology, Sandvik Venture and Sandvik Construction.  Each Business Area has responsibility for research and development (R&D), production and sales of our product offering and aftermarket support.  By always being innovative and listening to customers and market requirements, Sandvik has managed to follow the development in society and industry and contributed with products and solutions. Sandvik Mining and Sandvik Construction are leading global partners to the mining and construction industries, supplying a range of equipment and tools, service and technical solutions.

How many branches do you have all around the world?

Worldwide, Sandvik Group business activities are conducted through representation in more than 130 countries. In 2011, the Sandvik Group comprised 50,000 employees, with annual sales of more than 94,000 Million SEK (Swedish Kronor).  Sandvik Mongolia LLC is part of Sandvik Mining’s Asia Pacific Region team; which consists of Mongolia, China, India, Indonesia, South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

When did you open your branch in Mongolia?

We opened our branch here in Ulaanbaatar in 2006.  Today, we are located on Chinggis Avenue in the Monfresh Building.  Our facility in UB is a one stop point of sale and service; it’s our corporate head office, our sales and service team operate from here, we have our large warehouse and workshop from which we support and service our customer’s productivity requirements through our people, products and parts. Stop in and see us or go to http://www.mining.sandvik.com.

What kind of equipment do you supply and sale in Mongolia?

Sandvik Mongolia LLC offers the full Sandvik range of products, which opens Mongolian customers to a vast range of equipment and tools from one source. We provide surface and underground rock drills, loading and hauling equipment, rock cutting, rock crushing, and materials handling equipment, including conveyor components such as idlers, pulleys and dust suppression systems.  We have a well represented drill fleet across Mongolia operating in rotary, exploration, top hammer and down the hole solutions.  Sandvik’s load and haul equipment is underground at Oyu Tolgoi.  Sandvik Mining Systems designed the overland and in-plant conveyor system at OT.  Sandvik is involved in OT’s system start up operations, and we have an underground service support team there also, servicing Sandvik equipment.  Sandvik Mongolia also supplies the complete package of tools and consumables for drill and blast, down the hole and top hammer, including geological supplies for exploration.

What are the advantages of your equipment and tools, and buying from Sandvik?

Sandvik does have advantages in equipment and tooling performance, in the right application, when compared against our competitors; high penetration rates, high productivity, outstanding drill steel economy and low total cost in any type of rock.
Our rotary bits, for example, are tailored for different types of rock, as well as extremely versatile models, so we can optimize the performance of any rig to give higher productivity and lower total costs. The portion between the rig and the bit (drill string tools) is also critical to overall performance; we can supply our customer’s entire operation.

Safety, Productivity and Peace of Mind; that’s Sandvik Mining’s Value Proposition. We believe that our customer’s buy more than a piece of equipment when they purchase from Sandvik Mongolia.  In addition to offering productivity, Sandvik products and our support service enables our Mongolian customers to have peace of mind because their risks are minimized and their operations run smoothly.  We work hard as a team internally, both the production units and in the sales areas to ensure that this value proposition is reached. If our customer’s consider we are lacking, we listen, learn more and work quickly together on solutions. Overall, we have many great stories in Mongolia of our customer’s successes using Sandvik.

How well do they fit in Mongolian condition?

Our equipment has been designed for application in extreme environments and for all types of material encountered. From the extremes of the Australian Outback to the North West and South of Mongolia, Sandvik Exploration Drilling equipment has been delivering deep formation samples to the Mining industry.  Our Rotary series of drills, such as the D45KS and D75KS, are operating extremely well across Mongolia. Sandvik’s commitment to Safety and ongoing product development will ensure our position as a Global leader in our Equipment.

How are you going to expand your business in the future?

Sandvik has invested, and will continue to invest, in Mongolia; in ensuring we strive to attract the best people to service and support our clients’ equipment and productivity goals. We have a strong reputation in Mongolia for support stock of parts, tools and consumables to ensure availability of our customer’s equipment, particularly when our customer’s require parts and tools urgently. We recognise that we need to be close to our customer’s operations to support them. In this regard , we are looking regionally to expand our footprint outside of Ulaanbaatar, in particular in the South Gobi, to have our support structure even closer to our fleet.  We are focused on the development of new technologies such as automation and remote operation and monitoring to make the work place safer and more productive.  We of course invite our customers, your readers, to talk to us and let us know what they want us to supply, where they want us to be, how they think we can best contribute to the continuing development of the Mongolian market and to their needs.

We heard that you are going to participate Mining Mongolia exhibition. What kind of product are you introducing?

We will be exhibiting a Di550 Down the Hole (DTH) drill, and a DE740 Heavy Duty Core  drill.   Briefly, the new Sandvik Di550 is a DTH drilling rig which features a 324 kW diesel engine and a 24.4 m3 compressor air flow at 24 bar pressure – making the machine a perfect match for the 5” DTH hammer in mid to hard rock applications, such as iron ore.  This careful match of power and hammer size makes the rig uniquely productive, whilst keeping fuel consumption and operating costs as low as possible.  Cost effective machine performance is further enhanced by other advanced features such as active diesel RPM control, optimized diesel RPM level during drilling, and active control of compressor running temperature.

There is a new, efficient dust collector with non-stop cleaning, that decreases the amount of dust emissions to the environment and improves filter lifetime reducing the need for maintenance.  All daily maintenance points are located on the ground level to simplify the process and improve safety of service personnel. The DE740 is well represented in Mongolia.  It’s considered a midsize core drilling rig and is capable of pulling and running of rods in 9 m (30 ft) lengths. The DE740 is one out of two drills Sandvik currently offers in the series of heavy duty core drills – the DE700 series. With a possibility to telescope mast making it 1,8 m (6 ft) shorter, a pull force of 133,3 kN (30 000 lbf), a pull down of 67 kN (15 000 lbf) and a depth capacity of 1837 m (6025 ft) (N size) makes it a truly space efficient deep hole core drilling rig that has proven to be advantageous on sites where a smaller foot print is required. Our partner in Mongolia for Sandvik’s mobile crushing and screening equipment, JPCM LLC, will also be exhibiting a Sandvik QE 340 mobile crusher.

Whats the benefit of participating in this exhibition?

We see this exhibition as an important event in the growth of the Mongolian Mining and Construction Market, and we wish to highlight Sandvik’s commitment to Mongolia.  The growth in demand for Sandvik in Mongolia demonstrates that our customers are keen to utilize advanced, high-quality mining and construction equipment. Mining customers, and large and medium sized Contractors and Quarries in particular, constantly need to improve the productivity of their operations. This means that it is of great importance to choose machines that do exactly the job they are supposed to. The exhibition gives us a great opportunity to not only physically showcase some of our equipment, but to also bring in Sandvik global product specialists whom can listen to our customers to understand their individual requirements and answer specific questions that visitors may have.  The Sandvik stand will be located in the outside pavilion, to the right of the main entrance. To your readers, we invite you to drop by our stand and our UB facility, at anytime, so we can understand how Sandvik can support you achieve your business goals through our equipment and solutions.
