Candidates for strategically important deposits: Part II
An appendix to the State Great Khural Decree No.27 of 2007 refers to 39 deposits which might qualify to be classified as strategically important deposits if they fulfil certain criteria. These are known as candidate deposits. Our July issue gave general information on 13 of them, and this month we cover another 13 deposits. We do not give comprehensive details, but mention present ownership of the mines and give an idea of how these are working at the moment.
Mongolia asks Russia and China to realign gas route
Mongolia is calling upon China and Russia to re-direct a planned natural-gas pipeline across its territory as the world’s fastest growing economy seeks to tap the cleaner-burning fuel. Altering the route to pass through Mongolia would save 1,000 km of pipeline, President Ts.Elbegdorj said in an interview. It would also allow Mongolia to switch to gas heating in Ulaanbaatar, which ranks among the world’s most polluted cities due to widespread use of coal-fired stoves.

MRA accepts Gutain Davaa gold resource for registration
The Mineral Resources Authority has accepted for registration, after review and approval by a number of experts, the high grade gold resource at the Toordogiin Shil Prospect on the Gutain Davaa Project of Meritus Minerals Ltd. Under the Mongolian system, the resource is classified as a B+C Resource of 3.17415 tonnes of gold at an average grade of 5.73gAu/t. Because of the methodology, this is not compliant with NI 43-101 or JORC Code reporting standards.
New strategic approach to sustainable mining development
At aprofessional conference, I should directly get into the topic of sustainable mining development, but I feel it is necessary to recall the past as we observe the 90th anniversary of the mining industry in Mongolia. Elbegdorj wants TT partner chosen by year-end
President Ts.Elbegdorj has set an end-of-year deadline to select companies to develop part of TavanTolgoi, seeking to resolve a year-long battle for the resource between groups from five nations. Peabody Energy Corp., OAO Russian Railways, and China’s Shenhua Group are among companies affected by stalled talks to develop the West Tsankhi area of the coal deposit. Elbegdorj has said resolving the impasse will be among the top priorities of the new government.
After the election
With the election behind us, the Human Development Fund in its present form is all set to receive a make-over, and we shall have fresh discussions on new approaches to social welfare and new uses for the Fund. Work on the 2013 budget will also have to begin withoutdelay.
GENERAL GUIDELINES OF COLLABORATION ADOPTED AT THE 5TH CONSULTATIVE SEMINAR ON ASSESSING IMPACT OF MINING
According to a press statement issued on June 15,the Mongol Bank and the National Statistical Office successfully held the 5th consultative seminar of foreign sectors on “Measuring the impact of the mining industry on the economy”. The seminar noted that the available data and statistical figures are not enough to reach any definitive conclusion on the issue, and recommended more study and analysis in various areas, including policy, before assessing the actual impact.
Dramatic copper demand growth expected from China, India, Brazil
Copper consumption is rising dramatically in China, Brazil and India. Copper imports are normally an indicator of economic activity. For the first five months of 2012, copper imports by China increased by 52% year on year as demand for the red metal continued to soar.
