Mining Journal Awards: Recognition without fear or favour
The Mining Journal Awards were instituted in 2010 to give recognition to and
honor the activities and results of hard work in this sector. In only two
years, the fairness and independence shown in the selections have marked it out
among similar events where awards are won because of successful lobbying, or
for financial and other considerations. The Mining Journal Awards are valued,
by players in the mining sector as also by people in general, because they are
chosen by a panel of independent jurors with professional expertise and because
there is a total ban on receiving any
payment in any form from contestants.
The selection committee consists of professionals and experts in mining and environment studies and citizens’ representatives. They have included MP Kh.Narankhuu; N.Enkhbayar, Economic Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister of Mongolia;N.Algaa, Executive Director of Mongolian National Mining Association; Ts.Davaatseren, Director of the Mining Research Department at the Minerals Authority; DrB.Purevtogtokh, Ph.D and Director of the Mineral Institute at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology; Dr D.Dondov, Ph.D and a Merited Worker of Industry, head of the Marksheider Association, and Chairman of the Geophysical Mapping Department at the University of Science and Technology; D.Enkhbat, Chairman of Environment and Natural Resources Department at the Ministry of Environment; N.Batbayar, Chairman of the Environment, Tourism, Geology and Mining Department in the State Specialised Investigation Agency; and J.Unenbat, Executive Director of Company Government Development Center.
An invitation to submit their nomination is sent to every mining company in Mongolia, big and small. They are requested to forward to the magazine’s office their claim along with supportive evidence prepared according to a specified format. Evaluations by individual jurors are then compared and tallied to reach the final decisions. Among those vying for the honours have been companies that have come to define mining in Mongolia in recent days such as Energy Resources, OyuTolgoi and MAK, as also those who have been part of tradition like Erdenet Factory, Monpolimet and Baganuur. Among those who have successfully staked their claim to an award for their use of the most up-to-date technology have been Erdmin, TavanTalst, BulganGangat, Tanan-Impex, Shijir Alt and Major Drilling. The evaluation system adopted by the committee gives equal chance to smaller companies, thus making the event truly representative.
The awards are given for achievement in the following fields:
-Mining Operation
-Eco-friendly Mining
- Use of Technology
-Best exploration work
The winner of the award for the Best Supporter is chosen on the basis of
public opinion received during a month-long poll.
